Anyone go check this out? I would never call myself a trekkie, but i always watched The Next Generation at the very least passively in the background allthe time. This movie was pretty good though, definitely a big summer movie, but very well handled.

Yeah, I saw it saturday. I thought the actors really nailed all the characters -- Bones in particular was spot on. The storyline, on the other hand, I thought was terrible. Nero was weak and undeveloped. Too many holes in the story.

For example, in the beginning, the red matter singularity destroys a planet, yet it leaves Nero and Spock's ship intact, sending them back in time. Then at the end, it destroys their ship.

Why do they need to drill to the core of a planet before launching the red matter? Why not just detonate it at the planets surface, like they did with the supernova or Nero's ship? If the end result is a black hole, all they need to do is detonate it anywhere near the target, right?

And why in the world would the federation launch their new flagship Enterprise with a crew full of academy cadets who haven't even graduated yet? How could they even hope to run the ship with no experience? And why in the world would they promote Kirk to captain, again, without even finishing his academy training. He's got what, 3 years under his belt?

So yeah, terrible story, but the movie was entertaining for sure.

I thought it was good overall, but like Asano said lots of little things annoyed me as well.

Mainly the issues with black holes and how none of the shit they did is even remotely scientific in nature. That and I hated the scene where they jump out of the shuttle onto the drill in those suits and don't even heat up entering the atmosphere - they just fly through like its nothing. So dumb. Pretty disappointing for such a super sci-fi series like that just completely ignore basic laws of physics.

Yeah, I agree and that appears a major gripe for most hardcore people. It's more star wars than star trek. All the the techno stuff that star trek people pride themselves on is nonexistent. But they definitely lined themselves up for a big mainstrem, money making series.

And what about the green "alien" chick that was rooming with Uhura? That was the worst costume/makeup job ever. Like something out of the 60s version of star trek.

Pretty sure that was a direct nod to old school star trek.

MAYBE THEY CAN FLY THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE LIKE ITS NOT THERE BECAUSE IT ISN'T THERE EVER THINK OF THAT NUCH
and pilot school really depends on previous experience on how long it lasts.

I thought it was great, it was new enough to be different, but still held on to some of the things that make Star Trek what it is.

I thought it was an episode of lost in space. Arbitrary time travel and the ensuing paradoxes, the question of destiny and whether or not it's controllable. Mysterious red matter...cough...smoke monster. I was waiting for Jack to come and help Bones figure out what was wrong with Kirks swollen hands.
