I have to say, the prices of games is getting pretty stupid. In the age of digital downloads, the prices should be going way down, not up. And WTF is up with $150 collector's editions?? Who the fuck buys that shit?

I saw their little pvc statue. Charging $70 for it is insane, imo (I'll generously price the dvd + book at $20). But hey, as long as you're happy...

Spent a few hours in it today already (loltorrent) and, well, it's Fallout 3, basically.

Me neither. Been surprisingly stable for about 7 hours of gameplay.

Good game so far. Trying to play a ranger/assassin is pretty tough though. Maybe it's just me, but sneak is *really* slow to skill up (even with the Thief blessing). I'm level 11 and my sneak is only 26.

I kinda wish there was some indication that an npc holds a quest for you. Doesn't have to be as obvious as a bright yellow question mark over their head. But *something*. Talking to everyone gets boring.

You can buy sneak skill from some cat person not to far into the game. I'm playing the same way Asano, I like it.

I believe it's outside of the walls of whiterun, a tent/campfire with 3 cat people.

And yeah, the playstyle is pretty fun. Most things die to a sneak attack in 1 shot. I have my doubts about its effectiveness killing dragons and other tough mobs though.

I haven't had any crashing issues, and mine is a cracked copy!

The only real issue I have is equipping spells. For some reason it will not let me change what is equipped to my 'r' (left mouse click) and only my l (right mouse click) unless I equip an actual weapon then de-equip the weapon so that it is empty. No matter what I try I can't change the spell that is attached to my 'r' unless I do that "trick" - which is incredibly annoying mid-fight and makes the favorite list so much less useful, especially when dual-casting spells is pretty potent.

I guess I get what I paid for ~

If you like open world RPGs, then yes. It's a combination of the other Elder Scrolls games with strong elements from Fallout 3 and a heavy layer of consolization. I've enjoyed it so far.

Gogan
11-15-2011, 11:24 AM
I'm really enjoying it so far. I never played Fallout 3, but I can say there are definite improvements from Morrowind/Oblivion. The story is so-so, but the world is enormous with tons to do and the skill system makes for a lot of interesting playstyles.

rursusferre
11-15-2011, 12:20 PM
See, I loved the Fallout series, but Oblivion didn't really do it for me. But I think i'll still give it a go.

Gogan
11-15-2011, 12:37 PM
Yeah, I hear ya. I wanted to like Morrowind and Oblivion, but they never really clicked with me either. Skyrim has addressed a couple of my bigger criticisms with the previous two.

It keeps the open-world, do-whatever-you-want-whenever-you-want style, but provides better direction for quests and following the main storyline.

They also revamped the skill list, and made it a hybrid of talent trees and the classic skills. You still skill up through use, but can then spend points in each skill's tree which provides you with increased skill effects, or brand new abilities. It's a lot more interesting.

Finally, I hate the first-person perspective for RPGs, and you could never zoom very far out in Morrowind/Oblivion. Skyrim lets you zoom out a good bit, which makes for a much more enjoyable 3rd person view.

I'm enjoying it a lot. I think I should of went straight dark brotherhood and just murdered people or tried a vampire so I couldn't come out during the day sorta like Blake's current lifestyle. Options for another run through. I really enjoy that you can make your character based on what playstyle you feel like. Thief/mage, tank/healer etc. I'm enjoying the dragon fights while it will get old after a while i'm really enjoying it. Lots of fun, I recommend to anyone that enjoys these types of games.

Btw they are working on bug fix patch, no eta.

I went with straight up fire mage with a lot of thief abilities. I can't play RPG's without being able to steal everything that isn't bolted down. My house in Megaton in Fallout 3 had so much shit in it that it'd lag my game out everytime I went in there. My guy is kind of a glass cannon, but I blow shit up good.

Man, that is nice. Most of the dragons I've fought are blood dragons, which breathe frost. Regardless, I find unless there are some npcs or other mobs to keep the dragon occupied when it's on the ground, I end up dead very quickly.

What level are you?

18. I try to stay far away like you see in my picture. The archer zoom/slowdown is amazing. I tend to stay away from them on the ground cause of the same reason. I run in and reck them when they are low health.

Yeah, I'm low-30s but mostly because of skill-up abuse. Smithing, Alchemy, Pickpocket, and Illusion (hi Muffle!) all skill you up quite fast. I also found a spot where I could just sneak into a wall for a few hours all the way to 100. I'm not sure how much good is really does you, though, because the mobs scale with you, and you just end up high level with low combat skills.

They do get in the way sometimes. I still use Lydia, mostly to tank things in multi-mob situations, and she typically gets shot in the back when she runs in front of me. But even at level 32 with ~65 Archery, I get rocked vs more than a couple stronger mobs -- especially if I don't have room to kite.

Last night I ran the quest in the thieve's guild line where you and Mercer go after that Nightingale chick who killed Gallus. There was at least one pull that ended up with 6-8 Draugers, some melee some caster (with that damn shout/stagger they do), each which take a good 6-10 shots to kill (not using true shot pots or poisons). Mercer would tank everything until he's brought down then they just gang rape me. I ended up getting through it all eventually, but I can't fathom pulls like that solo.

Like those last couple screenshots of your Yoox... unless you're 1-2-shotting those skeletons, I dunno.

Yooxra

I'm 35 with 92 archery, I do 1 shot a lot of the lower stuff, 1/2 shot restless usually, scourge/deathlord take some work cause of their shouts. Use potions more they help a lot, I use stamina potions with slowing down the action with archery zoom is overpowered. Poison pots on weapon with keeping your enchantments charged is nice, if you went enchant at all it's nice too. I went lockpick and planning on going pickpocket which holds us back some. I thought about 2h but it's gonna be gimped with sneak points. I want to make a 2h toon at some point and be a melee rockstar.

I like the 50% zoom, but since it slows you down too, it's really too much of a win. Pots are huge -- agreed. But I can't say I ever drink stam pots. When I need to dish out a lot of dmg in a short time, I poison up and drink a true shot pot. But those are only for boss fights, really. My bow has Animus on it, for soul stealing, but maybe I'll enchant another bow with a dmg modifer instead.

I plan on skilling up enchanting (current ~35). I think that'll be huge. Same with smithing (which is already ~65). I hear upgrading your armor makes a huge diff (e.g. 2x the armor).

My lockpicking is in the 60s or 70 now; same with pickpocket. They skilled up *fast* once I started the Thieve's Guild line. I only put a few points into Pickpocket for the increase carry capacity bonus. Nothing in lockpicking. Don't think either are worth spending many points in. Points in Alchemy could be fun, for better poisons and health pots. But I don't think I'll have enough points if I go for Smithing/Enchanting.

I've been increasing my Magicka a lot, thinking I'd be a hybrid thief/caster, but that hasn't really panned out, so I kinda regret that now. Prob shoulda just went straight health and a little stam.

Like you, I'm really looking forward to playing again as a melee and caster. This game has fantastic replayability.

Holy crap that's a lot of stam.

I went wood elf because they allegedly were the best archers, but the starting skill bonus is inconsequential in the long run, it turns out. Apparently they get 50% resist to poison and disease though. Maybe that's been great, maybe not. Hard to tell so far.

The 50% fire/frost resist is pretty amazing. Hard to resist that for a melee character. The Orc racial seems pretty great too tho -- take half dmg and deal double dmg for 60 seconds? I'm guessing it's only once a day, but still. Tough choice.

Yooxra
11-22-2011, 05:40 PM
Yeah I was not to worried about start stats really. I'm thinking 50 extra magic with high elf is the way to go for my caster. Overall tho i'm leaning towards making another dark elf for the 50% fire resist. Thing about the resists is that you can get the 40% resist rings for heavy casting and dragon encounters. 90% fire or frost is just to good for owning fire/frost dragons and heavy caster encounters.

I went overboard on the stamina but it's well worth it for looting/ and never running out of slowing a fight down with bow or running in with weapons hot to rape something. It's why I don't have much problems with fights. I felt comfortable with health around there was thinking of raising to 300. Just didn't put anything into magic due to deciding not to do much in magic.

Asano if you haven't yet make sure you do some smithing it will help with killing stuff. 2 points alone help much with upgrating your armor and weapons. Upgrate magic gear.

Gogan
11-23-2011, 01:04 PM
Yeah, I've been slowly skilling it up (at 70 now), but only spent my first couple points in it last night. The armor and weapon upgrades *are* significant. And being able to upgrade magic armor/weapons was well worth the 2 points. I'll be spending more points there until I can craft Daedric weapons.

Think it'll be worth going 100 smithing for the dragon bone armor, or is the Brotherhood armor good enough to be your end-game gear?

Yooxra

My bow is Daedric, there is no dragon bow. I'm using cloth mage armor so not really sure if dragon is worth it or not. I made the dragon armor set for my companion, but it didn't blow me away at how good it was compared to other stuff (I can give you exact numbers later if you want)

Yooxra
11-23-2011, 06:28 PM
I looked over numbers, if you can enhance it(grind stone or work bench) it's better than the class sets.

I found a 35% pickpocket neck and a 30% better sneak ring. 50% frost boots and 50% fire something. Want to dischant and use that stuff when I have double enchant.

This, translated into English, comes out as
Dragonborn, Dragonborn
by his honor is sworn
To keep evil forever at bay!
And the fiercest foes rout
when they hear triumph's shout,
Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray!

Hearken now, sons of snow, to an age, long ago
and the tale, boldly told, of the one!
Who was kin to both wyrm
and the races of man
with a power to rival the sun
cut through enemies all
as the Dragonborn issued his roar!
Alduin, Bane of Kings,
ancient shadow unbound,
with a hunger to swallow the world!

But a day, shall arise,
when the dark dragon's lies,
will be silenced forever and then!
Fair Skyrim will be free from foul Alduin's maw!

Dragonborn, Dragonborn
by his honor is sworn
To keep evil forever at bay!
And the fiercest foes rout
when they hear triumph's shout,
Dragonborn, for your blessing we pray!

If you play Master difficulty and want to min max your character it seems that the best combo is using the alchemy / Smithing / Enchanting combo. With this you can buff your weapons and armor by 246%. Also from what I have read the best race choices are Breton (25% passive magic resist and Dragonskin) and Orc (Berserker Rage). Here are some notes that I found hope this helps you guys out...

Minimums required to make this work (perks) [skill]:

- Enchanting (8) [100]: 5/5 Enchanter, Insightful, Corpus, Extra Effect
- Alchemy (7) [100]: 5/5 Alchemist, Physician, Benefactor
- Smithing (5) [100]: Steel. Dwarven, Orcish, Ebony, Daedric
- Weapon Skill (5) [100]: 5/5 Armsman or 5/5 Barbarian (1h or 2h)
- Armor Skill (5) [100]: 5/5 Juggernaut or 5/5 Agile Defender (optional, but makes mid-game easier)

Using an Alchemy Enchanting loop, it is possible to make:

+29% Fortify Enchanting enchantments
+29% Fortify Smithing enchantments
+32% Fortify Alchemy potions
+130% Fortify Smithing potions

Your process should look something like this:

1) Fortify Alchemy enchantments 25% x4
2) Fortify Enchantment potions 30%
3) Fortify Alchemy enchantments 28% x4
4) Fortify Enchantment potions 32%
5) Fortify Alchemy enchantments 29% x4
6) Fortify Smithing enchantments 29% x4
7) Fortify Smithing potions 130%

This enables a total of +246% Weapon and Armor Improvement.

Combined with 100 Smithing Skill, and appropriate perks, it is possible to make:

- Any Armor Type with a final set armor rating in excess of 500. For weaker Armor, additional armor set perks may be required.
- Daedric Weaponry with attack damage in excess of 500
- 100 Heavy Armor, No Perks, Fully Upgraded Legendary Daedric is 590 with shield, 475 without.

Regarding the Armor Cap:

- Experiments show that the Armor Cap is above 500, but less than 672.
- It is impossible to get 100% Damage Reduction.
- No known enemy has Armor Ignore abilities, even though the player has access to 75% Armor Ignore.
- Lord Stone is a flat 50 Armor Rating added to your final Armor value after all other effects have been calculated.
- The UESP wiki lists the Armor Cap as 80%, at 567 Armor Rating.

This means that any Armor Rating above 567 has no effect!

Regarding Armor Perks:

- Heavy Armor Damage Reflection does not decrease damage by 10%; it just reflects incoming damage
- It is unknown if Heavy Armor Damage Reflection is before or after Damage Reduction. It appears to be after.
- Testing on the Heavy Armor 50% Anti-Stagger perk has been inconclusive. It may not actually be working right now.

Regarding short-term skill buffs:

- Weapon Skill and Armor Skill potions work as intended
- Archery Skill buff potion is bugged to give a buff to unrelated skills in addition to it's intended buff; expect a patch
- Orc Berserking stacks with all other buffs
- In extreme cases, a fully buffed player can hit for between 3k-6k damage without using a Sneak Attack. Ancient Dragons have 3.1k Hitpoints

Regarding the Magic Resistance:

- Magic Resistance Cap at 85%
- Magic Resistance and Elemental Resistance stack multiplicatively (( Damage * (1 - MR)) * (1 - ER)) = Damage Taken
- Elemental Resistance Cap is unknown, but appears to also be ~85%
- Alteration MR Perk is a flat 30% MR added to current MR.
- Block Perk: Elemental Protection is Elemental Resistance NOT Magic Resistance
- Magic Absorption is applied before Magic Resist is calculated. It acts as a % chance that you will absorb the spell entirely. If it doesn't get absorbed, the MR and ER calc is used.

Regarding Alchemy and Magic:

- Fortify Destruction potion is a +% Damage potion, unlike the Destruction enchants which reduce spell cost.
- Fortify Destruction potion caps at +162%. If you maximize an elemental perk, this will turn a 60 point spell into a 235 point spell
- Weakness to Element poisons act on the entire damage, so the max 97% Weakness poison turns 235 into 463.
- Multiple Weakness poisons stack additively, so 2x 97% Weakness poisons will give them a 194% Weakness (aka 690 damage)
- Dual Casting is applied before Weakness, so the effects scale very quickly into the 1000's.

Regarding Unarmed:

- Unarmed only scales with Base Gauntlet Armor Rating of Heavy Gauntlets.
- Unaffected by ANY perk except Fists of Steel
- Unaffected by ANY enchant except Unarmed Damage enchant (Pugilist Gloves in Riften Ratway)
- Untested using Shouts yet
- Max Damage is 46 or 61 (+14 Fortify Unarmed x2, +18 Base Daedric Gauntlets Armor Rating, +15 for Khajiit (optional))
- For reference, max one-handed mace damage is 536.

Alchemy Progression Chart: http://bit.ly/tXTbCk

Notes:

- One-handed Weapon Skill enchants don't work on Daggers, so it's damage is limited to 171. Although you can get a total x60 dagger-only backstab bonus.
- Potion-based skill enhancements are time limited, in some cases to as little as 30 seconds. Be quick when crafting your items and enchantments.
- No known enemy has Armor Ignore abilities, but we have not tested whether certain weapon types, such as Daedric, have inherent Armor Ignore.

Got my enchanting and alchemy maxed. Made my +alchemy set of armor, then +120% blacksmithing pots. Ultimately crafted my Daedric bow, improved it, and combined with my set of +46% bow dmg armor, had my base damage over 500. I was one-shotting regular dragons.

Unsurprisingly, the game kind of lost its appeal after that. Thanks Neleus. =P

I knew full well that doing it would ruin the rest of the game for me. But I couldn't resist once I found out about it. I couldn't keep playing knowing I was intentionally gimping myself along the way. It's not like entering some cheat code to enable god mode (though the result was roughly the same). There are items in the game that simply let you craft incredibly powerful weapons. Apparently the same was true in Oblivion and Morrowind (e.g. max camouflage, creating your own spells, etc). It's just part of the game.

As is most often the case, ignorance is bliss.

At least now I can focus on SWtoR. =P

How did you get your enchanting and Alchemy leved to 100? Any trick ?

Alchemy is an awful grind. I got in the habit very early on to collect every herb I came across, and always looted/stole ingredients whenever I saw them. I'd also buy ingredients from vendors since money is kind of irrelevant in the game. Then I always tried to make sure whatever I crafted would yield the biggest skill increases. It sucked though, no way around it.

Enchanting wasn't quite as bad. The only weap enchant I ever used was Animus to fill empty soul gems, so I was rarely actually using the gems for anything. DE'd everything I could. Bought all the petty and lesser soul gems from vendors since they were super cheap. Then I'd just enchant all the iron daggers and leather bracers I made from skilling up smithing (hundreds).

Being a thief and stealing everything in sight helped a lot, probably.

I hear what you're saying Asano but any stealth / bow class in this game is broken at the moment. I leveled one to 30 and I was clearing dungeons on master difficulty without ever taking any damage. I read that melee provides more of a challenge so I'm trying that now. As far as the overpowered Alchemy / Enchanting / Smiting goes I read that the game more challenging if you just use one. Currently I am playing a Battlemage. Being able to summon 3 Daedra Lords, wear heavy armor, use duel wield or one-hand shield is nice when combined with the armor and resistance buffs from Alteration. For this character I only went with enchanting.

Gogan
11-29-2011, 02:30 PM
Yeah, if I ever play the game again, my next character would be a conjurer. My original plan was to be a thief/archer that would summon in a pet for battles. But swapping between spells and the bow proved too slow. Besides, like you found out, most times you can 1-shot mobs w/ sneak attacks. I wanted to do more with daggers and backstabbing, but I think sneak attacks with bows do more damage. Though I hear there are handwraps from DB that increase the backstab multiplier by another 15x. 30x backstabs must be insane.

Choosing between Alchemy, Enchanting, and Smithing is a tough choice. Smithing is the easiest, but least useful of the three, I think. Especially if you play a magic user. Alchemy might be the most useful, but I don't know if I could ever level that up again. With max alchemy and enchanting (for 4pc +25% alchemy gear), I could make poison pots that added 180 damage, and paralyzation pots that lasted 30 seconds. But I guess enchanting and alchemy kind of depend on each other to be super useful. So choosing just one would keep things pretty balanced. That's a good call.

That's a great map Yoox, and a good indication of just how much content is in the game.

Did you "beat" the game? Is there a final master dragon?

Gogan
11-29-2011, 03:12 PM
I finished the main quest line, yeah. It's not all that long, really. But there's tons of side content I never touched, e.g. the Dark Brotherhood quest line. The game never really ends, of course. Even after you finish the main quest line, you can go back and do everything else you missed/skipped.

** SPOILER **

You fight Alduin -- the "final master dragon" -- at the very end. But you get lots of help from NPCs, so it's hardly difficult. Don't think Alduin being the final boss is much of a spoiler. You learn about him pretty early on. He's the one raising the other dragons.

Skyrim - Great Battle Of Dawnguard. This is a really epic video.

Really boggles me with how cool this game is that they decided to make an mmo based off Oblivion engine over Skyrim. Possibilities seem endless on all the cool stuff they could do.

Time to go back to Skyrim I think. Couple people decided to work on a mod that gives you an area with 1/3 the size of Skyrim in it. Called Falskaar. About 20 + hours of content. They worked on it for a year.

So these guys are trying to mod all of Morrowind to be like Skyrim
http://www.joystiq.com/2014/01/06/dev-diary-looks-at-morrowinds-rebirth-as-massive-skyrim-mod/

I think Quin should get on board and help out. So I can play this. I didn't play the original Morrowind

I think we should all get VR set ups and play elder scrolls online like this. Specially for PVP!

We should also look as much like our in game characters like he does. So everyone that plays a chick needs to go get a sex operation real fast. Oh, and get a wig.
