I was just
reading about this tonight. Most everyone says this was a bad and dangerous precedent to set. Rule #1 when dealing with terrorist threats is never to give in to their demands. And in all likelihood, the hackers would've had no way to followthrough on their threats.
An interesting point was made about the Batman Dark Knight bombing that happened a while back:

But still, Hollywood is full of pussies. They're leaving themselves open to all kinds of threats and extortion now.
