Solid State Drive
Going to get one soon. Currently looking at this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148348 A little bit more than i want to spend, but much more positive feedback for this versus OCZ. This is a good deal especially with the rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227551 but so many bad reviews, so i dunno. Thoughts? |

From what I understand, SSD drives just fail much faster than traditional HDs. So if you don't have the budget for yearly replacement, you should probably stay away for now.

great article, but i agree with what was said in there....i still want to get one regardless of the inevitability of failure

If you have the extra cash it's worth it. The difference in performance I saw going from a 7200 rpm drive to 2x10,000 RPM drives in a RAID0 was surprising so I can't even imagine how nice it must be to have a SSD.

If a traditional HD fails, at least you can always recover the memory, if a SSD fails and you don't have it backed up you're SOL. Nowhere near worth it to me.

The performance gains outweigh the risk of losing data. You're going to have risks with any hard drive, mechanical or NAND based flash drives.
Honestly if you're keeping important data on any drive without backups you're going to regret it down the road. With that said, I can't imagine you're going to keep anything other than the OS and a few games on the SSD, which aren't the end of the world if you lose them to failure. The solid states these days are pretty durable granted you buy one that isn't a cheap piece of shit with bad firmware. If you can afford it, try to find a newer (<6 month old model) SLC SSD.
